Where are they used?

Cooling towers are used in cooling systems of large buildings, power plants, chemical plants, food processing industries, among other places that require the removal of large amounts of heat generated in industrial processes.

These towers are responsible for cooling the hot water that has been used to cool machinery and equipment in these places, through an evaporation process.

The hot water is sprayed over the top of the tower and then distributed over a series of fillers, where a thin film of water is formed that is in contact with an air stream in the opposite direction.

This process causes the evaporation of water and the removal of heat from it. The resulting hot and humid air is expelled into the environment while the cooled water is recirculated in the cooling system to be used again.

Types of cooling towers

There are several types of cooling towers that are used depending on the cooling needs and the space available in the location where they are to be installed.
Some of the most common types of cooling towers are:

• Closed flow towers: In closed towers the fluid to be cooled (usually water) is circulated through the tubes of the exchange battery or the plate exchanger without direct contact with the outside environment, thus preserving the fluid of the primary circuit from any dirt or contamination.
• Open circuit towers: In open towers there is a direct contact between air and cooling water
• Adiabatic coolers: Designed to cool water ensuring a minimum operating cost thanks to the combination of two working modes, dry and wet.
• Evaporative condensers: Evaporative condensers are equipment used to condense the refrigerant gas of industrial refrigeration circuits.
