Types:
There are several types of heat exchangers, each suitable for different applications:
- Plate heat exchanger: Composed of corrugated metal plates, this type of heat exchanger is efficient and compact. Fluids flow through channels between the plates, facilitating heat transfer.
- Tube heat exchanger: Consists of tubes containing a hot fluid that are immersed in another fluid to transfer heat. It is common in boilers, refrigeration systems and air conditioners.
- Shell and tube heat exchanger: Combines tubes inside an external shell, which allows the passage of one fluid through the tubes and another around them. It is suitable for high pressure and high temperatures.
- Tube bundle heat exchanger: Used in applications with highly viscous or dirty fluids. The tubes are grouped into bundles and fluids flow through them.
How do they work?
The heat transfer process in a heat exchanger depends on the specific design, but in general, it works as follows:
- Fluid flow: The two fluids (one hot and one cold) enter the exchanger and flow through their respective ducts.
- Heat transfer: Heat from the hot fluid is transferred to the cold fluid through the walls of the heat exchanger, without the two mixing.
- Fluid outlet: The fluids leave the heat exchanger with modified temperatures. The hot fluid is cooled, while the cold fluid is heated.
